How to Prevent Being the Victim of a Staged Accident

A classic maneuver by scam artists is to move in front of your vehicle and suddenly slam on the brakes to avoid being cut off by another participant in the scam. You rear-end the vehicle, which has several occupants who naturally start complaining of severe neck pain. You appear to be the driver at fault and must file a claim with your insurance to pay for treatment of the alleged injured occupants and repair of their vehicle. Allowing yourself to become distracted and following too close behind the car in front puts you in the perfect position for this type of fraud.

Be on the lookout and avoid falling in behind a vehicle which begins to slow down for no apparent reason. Never tailgate or allow yourself to get boxed in behind a vehicle. These are the typical actions of people who are looking for an unsuspecting victim who may become distracted and not stop in time when they come to an abrupt stop. Insurance fraud such as this is the reason why auto insurance rates continue to climb.
