In the “brief, but interesting department,” the California Department of Insurance has announced the creation of an official Twitter account, @CDInews.

In a statement to the press, Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner said, “I am always looking for new ways to reach out to and engage more consumers, and I am glad that we can take advantage of an innovative tool like Twitter to share useful tips and alerts with Californians. The Department of Insurance is the largest consumer protection agency in the state, and expanding the means of communication with the public is vital to maintaining our high standards of service to consumers.”

So, what does the California DOI tweet about?

So far, their timeline includes news on rate cuts, such as this tweet dated March 5th:

Commissioner Steve Poizner cuts fees 6% at Dept of Insurance today. 4th time reducing fees overall, saved a cumulative $22 million for CA.

But the Twitter feed isn’t just for the DOI to pat its own back. It also offers tips on how to save money on insurance, and links to interesting videos.

An example of the latter:

We’re not sure whether the Department of Insurance will ever make the top ten list of popular Twitter feeds, but we’re fairly certain the Commissioner would never tweet while driving.
