Two days ago, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced their new look for driver’s licenses and state ID cards. The updated design is meant to make it more difficult to alter or counterfeit, as well as making it harder for people to use them to commit fraud, including insurance fraud.
Among the changes in the design:
- Licenses and IDs for people under the age of 21 will be laid out vertically instead of horizontally
- Ultraviolet light will be required to view some of the images.
- The signatures and dates of birth for cardholders discernible by touch.
According to DMV officials, people with existing, valid California driver’s licenses or ID cards will not be required to have the new cards now, but will receive them upon renewal.
