Insurance Brief: Rhode Island Drivers Pay Fines by Mail, Avoid Penalties

Rhode Island drivers, listen up!

Recent analysis has shown that drivers in Rhode Island who have multiple violations are remaining virtually unnoticed by the system.

Why?

Well, according to the Providence Journal‘s report from last Sunday, some drivers with many traffic violations have not had their records put under scrutiny or had their licenses suspended because they paid their tickets by mail before the due date.

The same newspaper report also said that traffic judges don’t always have access to motorists’ full driving records, because of a state law that erases most violations from a driver’s records after three years.

There is a newer law that allows judges to suspend the licenses of any driver who has four infractions within eighteen months, but the Rhode Island chief magistrate says that law cannot be used when drivers are allowed to mail in their payments for tickets.
